Closed-cell spray foam in Roswell

Closed-cell foam is denser, stronger, and a vapor retarder. In southeastern New Mexico it shows up most on crawl spaces, rim joists, agricultural buildings, and jobs that cannot spare the thickness open-cell needs.

How closed-cell foam works

Same two-component spray as open-cell, different B-side and a much denser result. The mix expands maybe thirty to fifty times, not a hundred. Cells trap blowing agent instead of air, so the cured plastic is rigid, about 2 lb per cubic foot, and often cited around R-6 to R-7 per inch. At sufficient thickness it is a vapor retarder. Water that is already in a wall still has to dry somewhere — usually to the dry Roswell outdoor air, if the assembly is detailed that way.

Installers spray thinner lifts because the exotherm is higher. They do not usually trim it; they stop at the specified inch count. The cured foam is rigid enough that some manufacturers advertise a contribution to racking strength. Treat that as a product claim to verify, not a reason to skip structural repairs.

What changes versus open-cell

Because it is a vapor retarder, putting it on the wrong side of an assembly can trap moisture. That risk is lower in Roswell than in a Gulf Coast climate, but it is not zero on roof decks with leaks or on walls with stucco cracks that take wind-driven rain during a monsoon burst.

Pecos Valley shops and barns see 100°F days and freezing nights with almost no thermal mass in the steel. Closed-cell on the underside of metal panels is a common commercial request. Those jobs are a different quote than a 1,200-square-foot attic. Say so on the form.

Closed-cell is not a license to ignore combustion safety. Foam against flues, recessed lights, and knob-and-tube is a specification issue. A serious installer will ask about those before they bid.

How to keep quotes comparable

Ask for board feet, product name, and finished thickness. A cheaper bid that sprays 1 inch where another sprays 2 inches is not a deal. For crawl spaces, ask whether a ground vapor barrier is included — foam on the walls without a soil cover is an incomplete moisture plan.

Does Roswell’s dry air mean I never need closed-cell foam?

No. Dry outdoor air does not make a dirt crawl space dry. Closed-cell is still the usual product against ground moisture, at rim joists, on metal buildings, and anywhere wall thickness is limited.

Is closed-cell a moisture barrier I can skip flashing with?

No. Closed-cell can act as a vapor retarder. It does not replace roofing, grading, or a crawl-space ground cover. Ask the installer what water problem they are solving besides insulation.

Why is closed-cell more expensive?

It uses more chemical per inch, yields higher R-value, and adds rigidity. Compare quotes on board feet and specified R-value, not a single lump sum.
