Rim joist spray foam in Roswell
The rim joist is the short vertical board at the edge of a wood floor, sitting on the foundation. It is one of the leakiest details in a ranch house — and one of the smallest foam jobs an installer will still drive out for.
How rim-joist foam works
From a basement, crawl, or missing soffit, the installer sees a repeating pocket: subfloor on top, band joist on the outside, sill plate on the foundation, and a joist on each side. They clean out old fiberglass, check for rot and pests, then spray closed-cell into that pocket so the foam bonds to all three planes. A typical specified thickness is 2 to 3 inches — enough to be an air barrier and a class II vapor retarder — not a full-bay fill unless the quote says so.
The chemistry is the same closed-cell mix used in crawls: two heated liquids, mix at the gun, limited expansion, rigid cure. Prep is most of the labor. Access, joist bays stuffed with plumbing, and termite-damaged sills all change the price more than the foam itself.

I am on a slab. Do I have a rim joist?
A true rim (band) joist exists where a wood floor is framed on a foundation. Many Roswell ranches are slab-on-grade and have no rim joist at all. Additions, converted garages, and houses with a crawl or cellar still might. Describe what you can see from a floor hatch or the perimeter.
Why closed-cell instead of stuffing fiberglass in the rim?
Fiberglass in a rim bay does not air-seal the sill, the band joist, or the subfloor gap. Closed-cell adheres to those three planes and is a vapor retarder at typical thickness, which matters where outdoor air meets indoor humidity on a cold January night.
Is rim-joist foam a whole-house job?
It is a short, high-leverage pass. It will not fix a 140°F attic. It will stop a lot of the air that sneaks in at the floor line. Many owners pair it with crawl or wall work; some stop there.
