Open studs versus a finished room
New work or a gut remodel is the clean version. They mask windows and floors, then spray into empty bays. Open-cell expands around wires and boxes and gets trimmed flush before drywall. Closed-cell shows up when the cavity is too shallow or the wall needs a vapor retarder. The gypsum that goes on next is usually the ignition barrier.
Finished walls mean injection. A pattern of holes, often high and mid-bay, a nozzle, and a slow-rise formula so they do not blow the drywall off the studs. Going in through stucco or brick is a different prep. Someone still has to patch, paint, and prove the bays that fire-blocking, plumbing, or old newspaper split in two actually filled.
Foam does not jump a fire block. A 1950s ranch with horizontal blocking is a stack of short cavities, not one tall bay. If the bid prices “the walls” as a single rectangle, ask how they find those splits.
West and south take the weather
Spring wind and afternoon sun hit those elevations first. Unsealed top plates, can lights on exterior walls, empty cavities behind plaster. Open-cell is usually enough in this air. Closed-cell shows up on a wall that shares a garage, sits below grade, or cannot spare the depth.
Knob-and-tube, chewed wiring, and an active leak are stop-work items. Foam over a wet stucco crack is how a good material becomes a problem. They should ask before they bid.

The drywall is already up. Can they still foam the walls?
Yes, by injection: small holes, foam into the cavity, then patch. Slower and messier than open studs, and easy to miss a blocked bay. Ask how they check fill, not how many holes they drill.
Why not blown cellulose in a 2x4 wall?
Foam air-seals. Cellulose does not, unless the crew also caulks and gaskets everything. Wind is the reason that matters here. Cost and patching still belong on the comparison.
Will wall foam fix a struggling swamp cooler?
It cuts leaks through the walls. It does not resize a cooler, and it does nothing for ducts cooking in a 140°F attic. Those are separate leaks.
