Hybrid spray foam in Roswell

Hybrid is not a third chemical. Someone sprays a thin closed-cell skin, then fills the rest with open-cell so you are not paying closed-cell prices for every inch.

The sequence

Same rig, two B-sides (or a gun change in between). First pass is closed-cell, often an inch or two, against the roof deck or the steel. That layer expands less and skins over stiff. After it can take another lift, they spray open-cell into whatever cavity is left. That one grows a lot, knits to the closed-cell, and gets trimmed if it comes past the rafters.

Each product still has its own thickness, temperature, and ignition-barrier rules. Stacking them does not waive any of that.

Why a roof deck in this climate gets this treatment

Roswell roof decks take a beating from sun. A thin closed-cell layer against the sheathing buys R-value fast and slows vapor if a leak or a monsoon burst wets the deck. Open-cell then makes up the depth. That is a reasonable spec in dry air. Fix the leak first.

You also see hybrids on 2x4 walls that cannot fit enough open-cell, and on metal buildings that want a closed-cell skin plus a cheaper fill on the girts. Those are not house-attic prices. Write down which building it is.

Make them split board feet by product. “Hybrid attic” as a lump sum hides whether you bought 1 inch of closed-cell or 3. If you are not sure you need both, read open-cell and closed-cell separately.

What changes the spec:

  • Roof deck, walls, or both
  • Whether anyone already told you that you need a vapor retarder
  • Old insulation that has to come out
  • Known leaks, can lights, location of the air handler
Is “hybrid” just two products so the bid looks fancier?

It can be. A real hybrid names why each layer is there: closed-cell for R-value per inch and vapor control, open-cell to finish the cavity cheaper. If they cannot split the board feet, you do not know what you are buying.

Where do crews here actually stack the two?

Most often on a roof deck. Thin closed-cell against the sheathing, then open-cell out to the specified depth. Foam in the attic and foam in the crawl on the same house is two jobs, not one hybrid lift.

Can I line a hybrid bid up against all open-cell?

Only if both list product, thickness of each layer, and finished R-value. A cheaper all-open-cell attic is a different assembly.
